Ruiny Pałacu w Bychawie
Bychawa, Poland, Poland
Ruiny Pałacu w Bychawie, located in the Podzamcze district of Bychawa near Lublin, Poland, originated as a defensive castle built around 1537 by Mikołaj Pilecki with royal permission from King Sigismund I the Old to counter Tatar raids, featuring a moated structure with visible earthworks replacing earlier 15th-century manors. Rebuilt into a Baroque palace around 1730 by Dominik Stoiński under designs by an architect named Niemiec and local mason Kłacz, it gained a rectangular plan with corner alcoves, a rounded southern ryzalit, and higher central section before a final early 19th-century Classicist overhaul post-1802. Burned around 1880, it was abandoned by owner Antoni Budny who built a new manor nearby using its materials, leading to partial demolitions in 1934-1935 and post-WWII; today, the picturesque ruins—western wall with alcoves, eastern fragment, and portico remnants with gables and window frames—serve recreation amid the scenic Bychawa Reservoir and fish ponds.
