Salzburg Castle (Burg Salzburg) is a large medieval hilltop castle overlooking the town of Bad Neustadt an der Saale in Lower Franconia, Bavaria. Built around 1150, it is one of Germany’s most significant examples of a Ganerbenburg, a castle shared by multiple noble families, and much of the complex has survived to the present day. The castle played an important role in regional administration and defense throughout the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it was expanded, damaged during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, and later adapted for residential and agricultural use. Its extensive grounds, ring walls, towers, and historic buildings reflect its long and varied history. Today, Salzburg Castle is a popular cultural landmark and visitor attraction. Perched above the Saale Valley, it offers impressive views of the surrounding countryside and preserves centuries of Franconian history within one of the region’s best-preserved castle complexes.
