San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden
San Luis Obispo, United States
The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden in California originated in 1989 from a student project focused on Mediterranean climate plants.
Located in El Chorro Regional Park, it sits on a 150-acre parcel with an initial 2-acre Preview Garden opened in 1997. The garden’s master plan, completed in 1998, guides development to showcase plants from the five Mediterranean climate zones: the Mediterranean Basin, California, Chile, Australia, and South Africa. It includes themed areas like the Display Garden, Children’s Garden, Fire Safe Garden, and Discovery Trail, which features interactive exhibits like a human sundial and panoramic views.
The garden emphasizes water conservation, native plants, education, and sustainability, and continues expanding to become one of the largest botanical gardens in the western United States.
