Sausenburg Castle
Germany, Germany
Sausenburg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a 665-meter hill called Sausenberg near Kandern in Germany's Black Forest region, Baden-Württemberg, originally built around 1246 as the stronghold of the Lords of Sausenburg.
The Counts of Hachberg acquired the site in 1232 from St. Blaise Monastery, establishing the Sausenberg dynasty in 1306 that ruled the Markgräflerland until 1503 when it joined Baden through inheritance, only to be destroyed in 1678 by French forces under Marshal Créquy during the Franco-Dutch War.
Today, remnants like a circular rampart, accessible tower offering panoramic views of the border triangle, and wall segments draw hikers to this atmospheric Black Forest landmark between Sitzenkirch and Malsburg-Marzell.
