Schloss Altenberg
Syrgenstein, Germany, Germany
Schloss Altenberg is a Baroque residence crowning a steep spur above Altenberg, a district of Syrgenstein in Bavaria's Donau-Ries region, Germany, first mentioned as a medieval castle in 1374 under the Lords of Westerstetten.
Repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, it was transformed into its current two-story saddle-roofed form with arcaded courtyard around 1693-1694 by the free lords of Syrgenstein, who shared local sovereignty with Neuburg until selling it in 1798 to the princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein.
Now privately owned by Prince Hugo of Liechtenstein since 1986 after state acquisition, the well-restored structure dominates the village skyline but remains closed to the public, symbolizing the area's noble heritage amid rolling countryside.
