Schloss Altenmuhr
Muhr am See, Germany, Germany
Schloss Altenmuhr is a historic moated castle in Muhr am See, Bavaria, with origins dating back to the 12th century. It was built by the Lords of Muhr, who served the bishops of Eichstätt, and is considered one of the oldest and most noteworthy castle complexes in the upper Altmühl Valley. Over the centuries, the castle passed through several noble families and underwent major renovations in the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries. Although many of its original defensive features, including much of the moat, were removed in the 19th century, the main buildings and historic tower remain. Today, Schloss Altenmuhr is still privately owned by the von Le Suire family and is recognized as an important cultural monument. The castle is also known for its connection to Friedrich Schiller’s play The Robbers and for serving as a filming location for The Robber Hotzenplotz.
