Schloss Altenschönbach is a historic castle in the village of Altenschönbach, part of Prichsenstadt in Bavaria’s Kitzingen district. The site evolved from an earlier medieval castle and later became a moated residence in the center of the village. After being destroyed during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, it was rebuilt by the noble von Crailsheim family, who acquired the estate in 1543 and still own it today. The castle combines architectural elements from several periods, including medieval fortifications, Renaissance additions, and 19th-century modifications. Its most notable features include a substantial surrounding wall, historic towers, and a central fortified tower that reflects its long defensive history. Today, Schloss Altenschönbach remains a privately occupied residence and an important landmark of the Steigerwald region. Its well-preserved grounds and centuries-old connection to the von Crailsheim family make it a significant example of Franconian noble heritage.
