Schloss Berchtesgaden
Berchtesgaden, Germany, Germany
Schloss Berchtesgaden, also known as the Royal Palace of Berchtesgaden, is a historic palace in the heart of Berchtesgaden, Bavaria.
Its origins date back to an Augustinian monastery founded around 1102, which gradually evolved into the residence of the rulers of the independent Berchtesgaden Prince-Provostry. Over the centuries, the complex was expanded in Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo styles, creating a unique architectural ensemble.
Following the secularization of church territories in 1803 and Bavaria’s acquisition of the region in 1810, the palace became a residence and hunting lodge of the Bavarian royal family. Today, Schloss Berchtesgaden remains associated with the House of Wittelsbach and is one of the town’s most important cultural landmarks.
