Schloss Berg
Berg, Germany, Germany
Schloss Berg is a historic lakeside palace on the eastern shore of Lake Starnberg in Bavaria.
Originally built in 1640 as an Italian-style villa, it later became a favorite residence of the Bavarian royal family. In the mid-19th century, King Maximilian II transformed it into a romantic Neo-Gothic palace with towers and battlements, and his son, King Ludwig II, used it as his summer residence. The palace is most famous as the final residence of King Ludwig II.
In June 1886, shortly after he was declared unfit to rule, Ludwig and his doctor were found dead under mysterious circumstances in nearby Lake Starnberg, an event that remains the subject of speculation and historical interest. Surrounded by parkland and overlooking the lake, it is one of the most historically significant royal residences in Bavaria and an enduring symbol of King Ludwig II’s legacy.
