Schloss Dautenstein (Privat)
Seelbach, Germany, Germany
Schloss Dautenstein (also called Tutenstein, Duttenstein, or Dutenstein) is a former moated castle located near the village of Dautenstein in the municipality of Seelbach in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Stonemasons’ marks show the original castle dates to the 12th century (around 1230–1240), and it was first mentioned in writing in 1251. The fortress was badly damaged in the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and then rebuilt in 1590 as a “new and magnificent residence” in Renaissance style by Baron Jakob, the last of the House of Geroldseck.
It was destroyed again in 1636 by Austrian troops during the Thirty Years’ War, later rebuilt and extended by the House of Kronberg and then the House of Leyen, but suffered another fire in 1755. In the early 19th century, privy councillor von Schmidt zu Dautenstein erected a small one-storey castle with a turret on the east wing’s surviving cellar, and Swiss-style wallpaper from that period still adorns the entrance hall.
The estate, which was once a four-tower water castle, is now privately owned, and visitors are asked to respect the owner’s privacy. The castle was restored around 1985 and retains its historic character with recognizable castle features despite later remodeling.
