Built between 1564 and 1572 by the influential Fugger family on the site of an earlier medieval castle first mentioned in 1374, it stands on a hill overlooking a large wildlife park. Over the centuries, the castle passed through several prominent owners, including the Princes of Thurn and Taxis, who shaped much of its present appearance and established a large enclosed game park around the estate in the early 19th century.
