Schloss Freienfels

Hollfeld, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Freienfels is a historic castle overlooking the Wiesent Valley in the village of Freienfels, near Hollfeld in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.

The site originated as a medieval fortress of the noble von Aufseß family and was first documented in 1342, although its beginnings likely date to the early 14th century. The original castle was damaged during the German Peasants’ War and was affected by later conflicts, including the Thirty Years’ War.

Between 1693 and 1701, it was extensively rebuilt into the Baroque-style residence seen today, while preserving its commanding hilltop setting. Today, Schloss Freienfels is known for its elegant Baroque architecture, historic interiors, and decorative stucco work by court artist Franz Jacob Vogel. As one of the most distinctive landmarks in the region, it offers visitors a glimpse into centuries of Franconian noble history and culture.
