Schloss Friedenfels
Friedenfels, Germany, Germany
Schloss Friedenfels is a Renaissance castle in the village of Friedenfels in Bavaria’s Upper Palatinate region.
It was built around 1590 by Friedrich Sittich Notthafft von Weißenstein after a family inheritance dispute, and the settlement itself later took its name from the castle. Over the centuries, the castle was remodeled and expanded, particularly after the Thirty Years’ War and again around 1900.
Despite these changes, it has retained much of its Renaissance character, including distinctive decorative architectural elements and its prominent position on a hill above the village. The estate remained in the hands of the Notthafft family until 1882 and later passed to the von Gemmingen-Hornberg family.
