Schloss Johannisburg
Aschaffenburg, Germany, Germany
Schloss Johannisburg is a magnificent Renaissance palace in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, overlooking the Main River. Built between 1605 and 1614 by architect Georg Ridinger for Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg, Archbishop and Elector of Mainz, it replaced an earlier medieval castle and served as the archbishops’ second residence until 1803. Constructed from the region’s distinctive red sandstone, the palace is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Germany. Its imposing four-wing design, grand towers, historic chapel, and richly decorated interiors reflect the wealth and influence of the Electorate of Mainz. Today, Schloss Johannisburg is the landmark of Aschaffenburg and houses several museums and art collections, including works by Lucas Cranach and a famous collection of cork models of ancient Roman monuments. Visitors are also drawn to its beautiful palace grounds and views over the river and city.
