Schloss Lauingen
Lauingen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Lauingen, also known as Herzogschloss Lauingen, is a historic castle in Lauingen an der Donau, Bavaria. It was built between 1474 and 1482 for the Dukes of Bavaria-Landshut and later served as a secondary residence of the Dukes of Pfalz-Neuburg, including a period as the widow’s residence of Countess Palatine Elisabeth from 1559 to 1563. The castle is a long, three-story structure distinguished by its two large round towers. Over the centuries, it was adapted for many uses, including a brewery, storage facility, courthouse-related functions, and eventually medical and social care purposes. Today, Schloss Lauingen is home to the Elisabethenstiftung, a care and social services institution. Although much of the original interior has been altered, the castle remains one of Lauingen’s most important historical landmarks and a prominent reminder of the town’s ducal past.
