Schloss Mahlberg
Mahlberg, Germany, Germany
Schloss Mahlberg, also called Burg Mahlberg, is a castle and palace located on a 196-meter-high basalt hill in the center of Mahlberg in the Ortenaukreis district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The castle's origins date to around 1200, and it was first documented in 1218 when Staufer King Friedrich II issued a certificate there in the presence of nobles including Heinrich von Geroldseck and Konrad von Mahlberg. The medieval fortress was captured in 1246 by the Bishop of Strasbourg, severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War, and then expanded in 1630 by the Margrave of Baden with a baroque-style palace.
Over the following 200 years, the castle fell into ruin and was nearly demolished in 1828 until Freiherr Christian von Türckheim purchased it and saved it from destruction. Major renovations took place in 1910–1911, and Freiherr Charles-Joseph von Türkheim-Böhl restored the castle to its present glory in the 1990s through five years of loving detailed work.
The complex consists of two main and two secondary buildings, including the "Altes Schloss" (Old Castle), a 40-meter-high two-story southwestern building that was formerly the rural clerk's office. The castle remains privately inhabited today and can only be visited on the Day of Open Monuments.
