Schloss Mespelbrunn is a picturesque moated castle located in the Spessart Forest in Bavaria, Germany. Originally established in the early 15th century as a fortified residence for the noble Echter family, it was later transformed into an elegant Renaissance-style castle while retaining its distinctive water-surrounded setting. Because of its remote location deep within the forest, the castle escaped much of the destruction that affected many German castles during the Thirty Years' War. Its current appearance largely dates from renovations carried out between 1551 and 1569, and it has remained in the hands of descendants of the original owners for centuries. Today, Schloss Mespelbrunn is one of the most famous landmarks of the Spessart region and one of Germany’s best-known water castles. Visitors are drawn to its fairy-tale appearance, beautiful reflections in the surrounding moat, historic interiors, and peaceful woodland setting.
