Schloss Mitwitz

Mitwitz, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Mitwitz, also known as Wasserschloss Mitwitz, is a picturesque moated castle in the town of Mitwitz in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

First mentioned in historical records in 1266, it began as a medieval fortified residence and later developed into one of the region’s finest Renaissance water castles. The castle changed hands among several noble families, including the von Schaumberg, von Rosenau, and von Würtzburg families. After being damaged during the German Peasants’ War in 1525, it was extensively rebuilt and expanded in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, giving it much of its present appearance.

Surrounded by a moat and parkland, Schloss Mitwitz is now a cultural and educational center that hosts exhibitions, events, and guided tours. Its well-preserved architecture, scenic setting, and rich history make it one of the most impressive historic landmarks in northern Bavaria.
