Schloss Neuburg am Inn, Vorburg

Neuburg am Inn, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Neuburg am Inn is a historic castle complex perched high above the River Inn near Passau, with origins dating back to around 1050 when it was built by the Counts of Formbach.

Thanks to its strategic location on the border between Bavaria and Austria, it played an important role in regional power struggles and changed hands several times over the centuries. The Vorburg, or outer bailey, is one of the oldest and best-preserved parts of the complex.

While the castle was repeatedly expanded, rebuilt, and transformed in Renaissance and Baroque styles, the defensive structures of the Vorburg remained largely intact and continued to protect the main castle. Today, Schloss Neuburg am Inn is a major cultural landmark owned by the Landkreis Passau. The restored complex houses event and exhibition spaces, historic gardens, and visitor facilities, while its elevated setting offers impressive views across the Inn Valley and into Austria.
