Schloss
Hettingen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Hettingen in Hettingen, Germany, traces its origins to an 11th-century fortress built around 1120 by the Counts of Gammertingen on a rocky ridge overlooking the Lauchert Valley, with surviving elements like the northern shield wall and a Romanesque gate from that era.
Passing through noble families including the Counts of Veringen (1240-1311) who expanded it into a military stronghold and main residence, Württemberg rulers, and the Lords of Bubenhofen, it transitioned from Burg to Schloss around 1524 under Dietrich Speth and saw major remodeling around 1720 by Freiherr Franz-Anton von Speth.
Owned by the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen princes until 1978 when acquired by the town, the renovated landmark—featuring a grand three-flight oak staircase, Rococo stucco ceilings, and integrated medieval tower—now serves as Hettingen's Rathaus (town hall) following a 1991-1994 restoration.
