Schloss Oberaufseß

Aufseß, Germany, Germany

Schloss Oberaufseß is a historic castle and residence situated above the Aufseß Valley in the village of Oberaufseß, Bavaria.

It was built beginning in 1690 by Karl Heinrich von Aufseß after a family dispute led him to establish a separate seat from the family's original castle. The strongly fortified complex featured thick walls and several round towers, reflecting the turbulent times in which it was constructed.

The castle successfully withstood an attempted attack by Bamberg troops in 1692 and was later remodeled during the late 18th century, giving it much of its present appearance. Over time, the divided branches of the von Aufseß family were reunited, and the estate remained in family ownership.

Today, Schloss Oberaufseß remains the residence of the Freiherren von und zu Aufseß family. Its picturesque setting, historic architecture, and surrounding parkland make it one of the notable landmarks of Franconian Switzerland, although visitors can generally view it only from the outside.
