Schloss Rosenau, Coburg
Rödental, Germany, Germany
Schloss Rosenau, located near Coburg in Rödental, Germany, is a historic castle with roots reaching back to the Middle Ages when it was the medieval seat of the Lords of Rosenau.
In 1805, it was purchased by Duke Franz Friedrich Anton of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld for his son Ernst, who transformed the then-ruined building into a summer residence between 1808 and 1817. The renovation was designed in the Gothic Revival (neo-Gothic) style by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, embodying romantic ideals that revived medieval architectural forms like pointed arches and ornate tracery.
The castle is renowned for its Marble Hall, rich neo-Gothic wall paintings, and black-stained Viennese furniture, reflecting a blend of princely grandeur with rural simplicity. Its surrounding park was landscaped as an English garden featuring an orangery, sun-dial, hermitage ruins, and water features.
Schloss Rosenau is also famous as the birthplace of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, who cherished the castle as a true home. Over time, it remained connected to European royalty and was restored in the late 20th century to preserve its historic character, now serving as a cultural landmark open to visitors.
