Schloss Sandizell

Schrobenhausen, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Sandizell is a historic moated castle near Schrobenhausen in Upper Bavaria and the ancestral seat of the Counts of Sandizell.

First mentioned in connection with an estate in 1007, it was expanded into a Renaissance-style castle around 1580 and became one of the region’s most important noble residences. During the Thirty Years’ War, Swedish troops destroyed much of the complex, leaving only the east wing standing. The castle was rebuilt between 1749 and 1755 in a Rococo style, and a gate tower was added in 1763.

It is also notable as the site where the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy held a council of war in 1704 before the decisive Battle of Blenheim. Today, Schloss Sandizell remains privately owned and is surrounded by historic buildings, a landscaped park, and the richly decorated St. Peter’s Church. Parts of the estate are used for cultural events, weddings, and gatherings, making it both a historical landmark and a living heritage site.
