Schloss Spielberg is a historic castle located on a hill above Gnotzheim in Bavaria, Germany. Originally part of the medieval castle network of the Counts of Truhendingen in the 12th and 13th centuries, it later became the ancestral seat of the princely House of Oettingen-Spielberg. Its distinctive oval layout, dating largely from around 1400, remains one of its most striking features. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several renovations and changes in ownership. In 1983, it was acquired by the artist Ernst Steinacker and his family, who transformed it into a museum dedicated to contemporary art while preserving its historic character. Today, Schloss Spielberg combines history, art, and nature. Visitors can explore exhibitions of Ernst Steinacker’s sculptures and paintings, stroll through outdoor sculpture gardens, visit the castle chapel, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Franconian countryside.
