Schloss Thurnau is one of the largest and most important castle complexes in Franconia, located in the town of Thurnau in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

Its origins date back to the 13th century, when the Knights of Förtsch built the first fortified residence on a sandstone outcrop. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and remodeled by noble families, particularly the Giech and Künsberg families, resulting in a unique mix of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and later architectural styles.

The extensive complex features historic towers, courtyards, covered wooden walkways, and richly decorated halls. It played an important role as a noble residence and regional administrative center, and many of its buildings reflect the wealth and influence of its former owners. Today, Schloss Thurnau serves both cultural and educational purposes. 

Parts of the castle are used by the University of Bayreuth, while other areas house a hotel and event facilities. Its impressive architecture and long history make it one of the most notable historic landmarks in northern Bavaria.
