Schloss Werneck
Werneck, Germany, Germany
Schloss Werneck is a magnificent Baroque palace in Werneck, Bavaria, built between 1731 and 1747 as a summer residence for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg. It was designed by the renowned architect Balthasar Neumann and is often referred to as the “little sister” of the Würzburg Residence because of its elegant architecture and historical importance. The palace stands on the site of an older medieval castle and is surrounded by extensive gardens that evolved from a formal Baroque layout into a picturesque English-style landscape park. For decades, it served as a prestigious residence for the region’s rulers. Since the mid-19th century, Schloss Werneck has been used for medical purposes and today forms part of a hospital complex. Although most of the original interiors were lost during the conversion, the palace church and impressive exterior remain, making Schloss Werneck one of the most notable Baroque landmarks in Franconia.
