Schloss Wernstein

Mainleus, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Wernstein, also known as Burg Wernstein, is a historic hilltop castle in the village of Wernstein near Mainleus in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

The castle was built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier fortification and has remained in the possession of the noble von Künsberg family for more than 600 years. Originally a medieval stronghold, the castle was transformed into an elegant Renaissance residence during the 16th century.

Although it suffered damage during the Thirty Years' War, it was later restored and has remained largely intact. Its combination of medieval and Renaissance architecture makes it one of the most beautiful castle complexes in Franconia. Today, Schloss Wernstein is a privately owned and inhabited historic estate surrounded by scenic countryside. It is valued for its architectural heritage, long family history, and prominent position overlooking the surrounding region.
