Schloss Wiesenthau

Wiesenthau, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Wiesenthau is a Renaissance castle located in the village of Wiesenthau at the foot of the Ehrenbürg hills in Bavaria’s Franconian Switzerland region.

The castle dates back to the medieval period, with the first documented mention of the site in 1379, although the local noble family of Wiesenthau was recorded as early as the 12th century. The castle suffered significant damage during the Hussite invasions in 1430 and again during the German Peasants’ War in 1525.

It was extensively rebuilt in 1566, creating the impressive three-winged Renaissance residence with four corner towers that largely defines its appearance today. For centuries, the castle was associated with the Lords of Wiesenthau and remained in their possession until the family line ended in 1814. Following a major restoration between 1985 and 1992, Schloss Wiesenthau was transformed into a hotel, restaurant, and event venue, allowing visitors to experience its rich history and historic architecture firsthand.
