Schloss Wildenstein

Dietfurt, Germany, Germany

---

Schloss Wildenstein is a historic castle complex in the Dietfurt district of Wildenstein, Bavaria, built on the site of an earlier medieval hilltop fortress.

The original castle was the ancestral seat of the noble Wildenstein family and dates back to at least the 13th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times following conflicts, including attacks in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. In the mid-16th century, the medieval fortress was transformed into a Renaissance-style castle.

After centuries of changing ownership and gradual decline, the property faced severe deterioration until a private group acquired and restored it in the 1970s, preserving the historic buildings for future generations. Today, Schloss Wildenstein remains an important cultural landmark in the Altmühl Valley. Its historic architecture, former castle chapel, and restored estate buildings reflect centuries of regional history, while parts of the complex are used for residential and cultural purposes.
