Schweppermannsburg

Kastl, Germany, Germany

---

Schweppermannsburg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located near Pfaffenhofen, a district of Kastl in Bavaria.

The castle was probably built in the 12th or 13th century and was first documented in 1329. It became associated with the noble Schweppermann family, particularly the knight Seyfried Schweppermann, who was renowned for his service to Emperor Louis IV of Bavaria. The fortress played an important role in regional history but suffered severe damage during conflicts, including the Thirty Years’ War, when Swedish troops destroyed it in 1633.

Although parts of the castle were later rebuilt, it gradually declined and eventually became a ruin. Today, visitors can see restored sections of the castle, including portions of the outer walls, gates, and keep. Set above the Lauterach Valley, the site is valued for its historical significance, scenic views, and ongoing preservation as a protected cultural monument.
