The Sherman Library and Gardens in Newport Beach, California, originated in the 1950s when Arnold D. Haskell purchased a nursery property that included a historic adobe house, naming the garden and research library after his mentor Moses Hazeltine Sherman.

Sherman was a prominent early-20th-century businessman and land developer involved in the growth of Southern California's railroads and real estate, credited with shaping communities like Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. Haskell acquired surrounding lots over the next decade, transforming the site into a cultural and horticultural center dedicated to education, preservation, and research on the history and natural heritage of the Pacific Southwest.
