Shivaji Park
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Shivaji Park, officially Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park, is a large public park in the Dadar area of central Mumbai, Maharashtra, and is the biggest open space in Mumbai’s island city.
Spread over about 28 acres, it was created in 1925 by the Bombay Municipal Corporation and named after the 17th‑century Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji. The park is famous as a cradle of Indian cricket, hosting several historic cricket clubs and practice grounds that have produced national stars such as Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, while also serving as a key venue for political and social gatherings, including pre‑independence anti‑British meetings and post‑1947 pro‑Maharashtra movements.
Today it remains a lively hub for sports, evening walks, local food stalls, and community events, surrounded by upscale residential buildings and colonial‑era architecture, making it both a recreational landmark and a symbol of Mumbai’s cultural and political heritage.
