Shri Sthaneshwar Mahadev Mandir
Haryana, India
Shri Sthaneshwar Mahadev Mandir is one of the most ancient and revered Hindu temples in Kurukshetra district, Haryana, located in the historic town of Thanesar and dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as “Sthaneshwar” (Lord of the place).
According to legend, this is the very spot where the first Shiva lingam was installed and where the Pandavas, along with Lord Krishna, prayed to Shiva before the Mahabharata war to seek his blessings for victory. The temple is also associated with stories of sage Dadhichi defending his faith against Lord Vishnu, and it is said that the town’s name “Thanesar” itself is a corruption of “Sthaneshwar,” which was the capital of Emperor Harshavardhana.
Devotees believe that the tank adjoining the temple has holy water, and some drops from it are said to have cured King Ban of leprosy, making a visit to this mandir essential for completing any pilgrimage to Kurukshetra. The temple complex has a distinctive dome‑shaped roof in a regional architectural style, with an elongated amla‑shaped front and a tall pinnacle.
Within it there are shrines of Lakshmi Narayan on the left, and deities such as Shani, Balaji, Bhairav, Hanuman, and Durga, while just beside the main entrance stands a large statue of Harihar (half Vishnu, half Shiva) and a nearby Gurudwara marking the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur stayed. Major festivals include Mahashivratri and Diwali, when the temple is decorated with flowers and lights and special prayers are held, attracting large numbers of devotees from across the region.
