Verified Sipolo-Hegy

Esztergom, Hungary, Hungary

Sípoló-hegy is a hill on the eastern edge of Esztergom in the Visegrád Mountains, rising to about 317 meters above sea level.

Surrounded by wooded landscapes and hiking routes, it is a popular spot for outdoor recreation and offers scenic views of the surrounding region. The hill is best known for its historical significance as the site of a late 16th-century earthwork fortress built during the 1595 Siege of Esztergom.

The fort, known as Saint John’s Fort, was constructed by Christian forces as part of their campaign against the Ottoman-held castle of Esztergom. Although the fort no longer survives, traces of its defensive embankments can still be seen beneath the vegetation. Today, Sípoló-hegy combines natural beauty with historical interest.

Visitors can enjoy hiking, panoramic viewpoints, nearby rock formations, and reminders of the region’s military past, making it an appealing destination for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
