Słońsk
Poland, Poland
Słońsk is an urban village in western Poland's Lubusz Voivodeship, Sulęcin County, serving as the gmina seat near the Warta River mouth and Ujście Warta National Park, with origins as a 13th-century settlement first documented in 1295 amid early Polish Lubusz Land later acquired by Brandenburg.
Templars held it until 1312, followed by a castle built around 1341 by the Uchtenhagen family, which the Knights Hospitaller purchased in 1426 as the Brandenburg Bailiwick seat, expanding it into a Gothic stronghold with Renaissance and Baroque alterations including a church (1474-1522), hospital, and economic facilities thriving until WWII.
Granted town rights before 1341 but demoted to village status in 1947 after Soviet capture, German expulsion, and Polish resettlement, it preserves castle ruins destroyed by a 1975 fire alongside its fishing heritage, industry from the Otto Rubow era (1892-1924), and natural surroundings.
