Verified Smolajny

Poland, Poland

Smolajny is a village in northern Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Olsztyn County, within Gmina Dobre Miasto, located along the Łyna River in the historic Warmia region about 5 km north of Dobre Miasto and 28 km north of Olsztyn.

Founded in 1290 by Warmia Bishop Heinrich Fleming as a bishopric folwark, it became the summer residence of Warmia prince-bishops from 1350, featuring a medieval defensive manor destroyed in wars of 1414, 1454, 1519–1521, and 1709 but rebuilt each time, incorporating into Poland in 1454 and confirmed in 1466 amid anti-Teutonic efforts.

The standout landmark is its Rococo bishop's palace built 1741–1746 by Prince-Bishop Adam Stanisław Grabowski on old foundations, beloved by poet Ignacy Krasicki—who added a park and 1765 gate tower—now repurposed as an agricultural school amid 18th-19th century houses.
