Sochaczew is a historic town in central Poland's Masovian Voivodeship, about 50 km west of Warsaw along the Bzura River, serving as the county seat with a population around 38,000 and known for its role as a key transport junction on routes to Poznań.

First mentioned in 1138 as the site of Duke Bolesław III Wrymouth's death, it emerged as an early administrative center with a wooden-earth castle by 1221, gaining town rights around 1368 under Masovian princes who used it as a stronghold and trade hub at the crossroads of east-west and north-south paths. 

It endured invasions, fires, and partitions—including Prussian annexation in 1793—but rebounded with 19th-century railways and modern infrastructure, featuring castle ruins revitalized recently and cultural sites like the Narrow Gauge Museum, while playing a role in WWII's Battle of the Bzura.
