Verified Somerleyton Hall

UK, United Kingdom

Somerleyton Hall is a grand Victorian country house on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk in eastern England, near the seaside town of Lowestoft.

It sits within a large privately owned estate of around 5,000 acres and is still lived in by the Crossley family, currently the 4th Baron and Lady Somerleyton, who also host guests and events there. The house was largely rebuilt in the 1840s by railway entrepreneur Sir Samuel Morton Peto, using a historic Jacobean plan with an ornate Italianate exterior by sculptor John Thomas, and is now regarded as one of the finest Victorian stately homes in the country.

Its formal gardens, laid out by William Andrews Nesfield, cover about 12 acres and include sweeping lawns, a walled kitchen garden, a sunken garden, and a famous yew hedge maze planted in 1846, all of which are protected as Grade II* listed historic landscapes. The Hall and Gardens welcome visitors seasonally and are also used for weddings, corporate events, and luxury stays, blending historic architecture with modern country‑house hospitality.
