Sonoma Botanical Garden
California, United States
The Sonoma Botanical Garden, formerly known as Quarryhill Botanical Garden, is a 61-acre woodland garden near Glen Ellen, California, founded in 1987 by Jane Davenport Jansen on land that was once a sandstone quarry.
It is internationally recognized for its extensive collection of wild-collected Asian plants, including magnolias, rhododendrons, and maples, grown from seeds gathered during field expeditions to China, Japan, Korea, and other parts of Asia.
In recent years, the garden expanded its mission to include the native plants of California’s floristic province, adding 22 acres featuring oak savanna, chaparral, and redwood habitats, which complements the Asian collection by showcasing related species adapted to local conditions.
The garden offers visitors a diverse natural experience with meandering trails through varied landscapes, seasonal blooms, and special exhibits like the whimsical 'Winged Wonders' bamboo bird sculptures. Serving as both a sanctuary for rare plants and an educational resource, the garden inspires conservation awareness and environmental stewardship in a serene, picturesque setting.
