Spandau Citadel (Zitadelle Spandau) is one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe and one of Berlin’s most important historic landmarks. Built between 1559 and 1594 on the site of an earlier medieval castle, it stands on an island at the meeting point of the Havel and Spree rivers and was designed to defend the city and the surrounding region. The fortress has played many roles throughout its history, including a military stronghold, a prison, a treasury, and a strategic defense site during major European conflicts. One of its most famous features is the Julius Tower, dating from the early 13th century and considered the oldest surviving secular building in Berlin. Today, Spandau Citadel serves as a museum and cultural venue, hosting exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and historical events. Visitors can explore centuries of Berlin’s history while enjoying one of the city’s most impressive architectural monuments.
