Verified Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens

Akron, Ohio, United States

Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio, was built between 1912 and 1915 as the country estate of F. A. Seiberling, co-founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and his wife Gertrude.

The name Stan Hywet means "stone quarry" in Old English, reflecting the site's natural features including abandoned quarries. The estate spans about 70 acres and includes a 65-room Tudor Revival manor house, a Gothic Revival conservatory, a gate lodge, and ten historic gardens designed by landscape architect Warren Manning. The gardens include a Japanese garden created in 1916, and an English garden redesigned in 1929 by Ellen Biddle Shipman.

In 1957, following Seiberling’s death, the estate was opened to the public as a historic house museum, preserving nearly 95% of its original furnishings. It is recognized as one of the largest historic homes open to the public in the U.S. and holds status as a National Historic Landmark. Visitors today enjoy tours of the manor, explore the expansive formal gardens, and participate in seasonal events, appreciating the estate's rich architectural and horticultural heritage.
