Stanford University Arboretum
Stanford, California, United States
The Stanford University Arboretum began with the native live oaks on Leland Stanford’s estate, which later became the university campus.
In 1885, Stanford hired famed landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted to plan the grounds, intending the arboretum to showcase all trees and woody plants that could thrive in the local climate. Early plans included combining the University Forest with the Arboretum.
However, an ambitious tree collection never fully materialized, and by the early 20th century, maintenance declined, allowing eucalyptus trees to dominate. Despite this, some of the century-old eucalyptus trees still survive today, though they are in declining health.
The arboretum area stretches from the main university quadrangle to nearby streets and includes various tree plantings and native vegetation, reflecting the Stanfords' early vision of conservation and botanical education. Over time, the arboretum was integrated into the campus landscaping, serving as a decorative and ecological feature while supporting botanical studies.
