Stary Dzierzgoń
Poland, Poland
Stary Dzierzgoń is a village in northern Poland's Pomeranian Voivodeship, serving as the seat of Gmina Stary Dzierzgoń in Sztum County, located about 8 km northeast of Dzierzgoń amid rural farmlands.
It was the site of a major Prussian stronghold, likely the center of the Pomesania tribe, captured by Teutonic Knights on Christmas Eve 1242 during the first Prussian uprising, briefly retaken by Prussians allied with Duke Świętopełk II of Pomerelia before the Knights built a wooden tower on its ramparts.
Abandoned by 1247 after the Teutonic Order relocated to a new brick castle in nearby Dzierzgoń (Neu Christburg), the site hosted a 1249 peace treaty ending the uprising; the village received Chełmno law settlement rights in 1312 on 80 włókas of land, with remnants today limited to visible earthworks, moats, and ramparts of the oval-shaped gord.
