Sternberg
Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke, Germany, Germany
Sternberg is a small village in the municipality of Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, best known for the impressive Schloss Sternberg that rises above the surrounding countryside. The site began as a medieval castle built by the Counts of Henneberg in 1199 and served as an important center of local authority for centuries. The original fortress suffered heavy damage during the German Peasants’ War and the Thirty Years’ War. Between 1667 and 1669, it was rebuilt as a grand Baroque palace with four wings and four distinctive domed corner towers, making it one of the largest country palaces in Franconia. Today, Schloss Sternberg remains the village’s defining landmark. Although privately owned and generally only viewable from the outside, it is admired for its striking architecture, historical significance, and prominent hilltop location overlooking the Grabfeld region.
