Verified Strzegom

Poland, Poland

Strzegom is a historic town in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in Świdnica County, situated among granite hills and known as the "capital of Polish granite" for its longstanding quarrying tradition.

One of the region's oldest settlements with traces from Roman times and a 10th-century Piast fortified gord under a castellan, it was first mentioned in 1155 in a papal document confirming Wrocław diocese boundaries, deriving its Polish name possibly from "strzec" (guard), "strzyc głowy" (cut hair), or "trzy góry" (three mountains).

Granted town privileges post-1241 Mongol invasion by Anne of Bohemia to aid rebuilding, it passed to the Duchy of Legnica in 1248 amid Piast fragmentation, later under Czech, Habsburg, and Prussian rule from 1742, featuring medieval walls from the 1290s, a Benedictine monastery from 1307, and the Gothic Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul begun in 1203 with Poland's oldest operating bell from 1318.

A clothmaking and brewing center that endured wars—including the 1745 Battle of Hohenfriedberg nearby—it became German Striegau until 1945 expulsion, now preserving its heritage sites and granite legacy.
