The Historic City Center of Sucre, Bolivia, is a well-preserved colonial urban area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Founded by the Spanish in the early 16th century as La Plata, it was renamed Sucre in honor of the independence leader Antonio José de Sucre. The city is notable for its blend of local architectural traditions with European styles spanning the Renaissance, Mudejar, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods.

Its layout features a classic Spanish colonial checkerboard street pattern. Sucre was historically a judicial, religious, and cultural center, with key buildings such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the churches of San Lázaro, San Francisco, and Santo Domingo, the Casa de la Libertad (where Bolivia's independence was declared), and the University of San Francisco Xavier.

The city’s architecture reflects a peaceful and elegant colonial atmosphere with whitewashed buildings, narrow winding streets, and well-preserved religious and civic structures. Located at high altitude in the Andes, Sucre enjoys a mild climate.

Today, it remains an important cultural and educational hub with a rich historical legacy that vividly illustrates the fusion of European and indigenous influences in Latin America’s colonial history.
