Szamotuły
Poland, Poland
Szamotuły is a town in western Poland's Greater Poland Voivodeship, located about 35 km northwest of Poznań along the Sama River, serving as the county seat with around 18,000 residents.
First mentioned in 1231 as a settlement with fairs established by Duke Przemysł I before 1257, it gained town rights by 1383 under Polish nobility and became a hub for trade, crafts, and Reformation in the 16th century under the Górka family, hosting Poland's first Greater Poland printing press around 1551 in its castle.
A pilgrimage site since 1666 for the "Szamotuły Lady" icon, it endured Prussian rule from 1793, Nazi massacres of Poles in 1939-1940, and WWII destruction before returning to Poland, preserving landmarks like the Gothic Church of St. Mary, a historic market square, and castle remnants amid its resilient cultural heritage.
