Szarvaskő Castle Ruins are the remains of a medieval stone castle overlooking the village of Döbrönte on the western edge of the Bakony Hills in Hungary.

The castle was built between 1367 and 1374 by Benedek Himfy, a trusted noble and military leader of King Louis I, and was named after the deer featured in the Himfy family coat of arms. During the 15th century, the castle became associated with the turbulent fortunes of the Himfy family, who were involved in numerous disputes and gained a reputation as “robber knights.”

The fortress later passed to other noble owners and was strengthened in the 16th century with new defensive features, including an artillery bastion, as the Ottoman threat grew. Although it never became a major military stronghold, the castle contributed to the regional defense system during the Ottoman era.

It was eventually abandoned in the late 16th century, and over time many of its stones were removed for use in local buildings, leaving the ruins seen today. Today, the partially restored ruins are a popular historical attraction, offering visitors attractive views over Döbrönte and the surrounding Bakony landscape while providing a glimpse into Hungary’s medieval past.
