Szczebrzeszyn is a small historic town in southeastern Poland's Lublin Voivodeship, within Zamość County, situated on the Wieprz River between the Roztocze and Słonny Mountains regions, serving as a key point on ancient trade routes from Kyiv to Kraków.

First mentioned in 1352 under Casimir the Great as an existing Ruthenian settlement with early medieval fortifications, it gained Magdeburg rights around 1388 under noble families like the Gorajs and later Zamoyskis, who shaped its market square, churches, and castle ruins from the 14th-16th centuries amid invasions by Cossacks, Swedes, and Tatars.

Once a vibrant Jewish community center with a synagogue and cemetery until WWII devastation, it endures in Polish culture through Jan Brzechwa's famous line about its "chrząszcz" (beetle) sound, drawing visitors to sites like the 17th-century churches and landscape parks nearby.
