Szreńsk
Poland, Poland
Szreńsk is a picturesque village in north-central Poland's Masovian Voivodeship, within Mława County, serving as the seat of Gmina Szreńsk and situated along the Mławka River near its confluence with the Przylepnica, in the historic Zawkrze region.
Settlement traces date to the 9th-10th century with an early gród stronghold of earth-and-stone ramparts, expanded in the 12th century under Bolesław III Wrymouth, destroyed by Prussians, and first documented in 1240, gaining Chełmno-law town rights in 1383 from Duke Siemowit IV as a private noble town of the Szreński family of Dołęga coat of arms.
In the 16th century, Feliks Szreński built a grand defensive castle with four towers, perimeter walls, residential buildings, a gatehouse, and chapel at the old gród site, alongside rebuilding the late-Gothic Church of St. Adalbert, which endures today; occupied by Swedes in 1656, it lost town status in 1869 amid Russian rule.
